BLOG: A New Battleground State

Battleground not as in red/blue, but as in yay/nay. Those on either side of California’s decision to constitutionally ban gay marriage have pulled out their wallets.

As of Monday, spending on Prop 8 in California had exceeded $73 million, according to an AP story.

This is twice the amount spent in 24 other states combined that faced similar voting box measures in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

Opponents of Prop 8 have spent $37.6 million, while those in favor of the measure have spent $35.8 million. The difference between the sums, a paltry half-million.

About 30 percent of the money has come from out of state, maybe indicating that California is the new same-sex marriage bellwether.
